Nobody's making babies

--Facts that I find amazing. The current September issue of National Geographic magazine features an article on world slavery. I'm not talking about poverty or people living like slaves, I'm talking about actual slaves, people who are being bought and sold for work, for prostitution, for any of a dozen reasons. There are 21 million men but mostly women and children who are actual slaves in today's "civilized" world. It's one of the most incredible documented story I've ever read. In parts of the world you can buy a women for $1,000 to $4,000 in cash. You can buy a child for less.

In the same issue of National Geographic and in the September issue of Scientific American there are articles about the collapsing population of Europe and of white America. It takes a fertility rate of 2.11 to keep a nation's population stable. Below 2.11 and a country loses population.

It's expensive these days to have babies. In the old days, you had a lot of kids as insurance for your old age. And you needed kids to do work on the farm. Today kids are a high-cost expense, and for many couples they are a burden. And divorces are common and easy to obtain.

In Japan women are resisting getting married. They don't want to live with the typical arrogant, macho Japanese men. The percentage of unmarried Japanese women is climbing. And from the women's standpoint, with good reason.

Want to know what's happening in Europe? Here are some fertility rates -- Germany 1.35, Spain 1.15, Romania 1.32, Italy 1.32, France 1.89, Sweden 1.64, UK 1.60, Switzerland 1.41, Ukraine 1.14, Russia 1.14, Sweden 1.64, Austria 1.28, and so on. In France they are so desperate for babies that mothers don't have to be married; they don't even have to be French.

And it's not just happening in Europe, it's global. It's a trend that hasn't happened since the 14th century when the Black Death wiped out one-third of the entire population of Europe.

Without babies to replenish the labor force and pay taxes, Europeans will be hard-pressed to fund the pensions of longer-living retirees. As this trend continues, European governments will have to raise the retirement age, raise taxes, and cut benefits.

In America the population increases only because of the 3.11 fertility rates of Latinos, and the 2.19 fertility rate of blacks and because of immigration. The fertility rate of US whites is just 2.11.

Why the decline in the white fertility rate? One reason is contraception that today is 99% effective. Another is that many women would rather be independent and would rather work than have husbands and babies. More women now get advanced degrees than do men. Women's wages continue to climb nearer to men's wages. And today's liberated American women feel they don't have to put up with boorish and selfish men.

A friend told me to check Jdate. This is a free internet service whereby Jewish men and women can find each other. I checked it out, and I was amazed. You can bring up any area in the country, and check for any age group. I checked the San Diego area for available Jewish woman, and I couldn't believe it.

The entire Jewish population of the US is only 2 percent. Yet Jdate lists (with pictures and biographies) literally hundreds of young Jewish women in this area who are looking for mates. These women tend to be highly educated, many have advanced degrees, many have good jobs -- lawyers, accountants, doctors, business women, all looking for husbands. What goes on? If this is the case with Jewish women, what must it look like for non-Jewish women. No wonder the white birth rate in the US is declining. It seems nobody's finding their lover -- or else the men are not interested in getting married any longer or else the women are becoming very particular or -- well, it beats me.

It's quite a story, it really is. And mind you, I didn't even check for men on the Jdate site.

If you believe the magazines and the movies, everybody in America and Europe is having fun and having lots of sex and showing a lot of skin -- but nobody's making babies.

Social Security, anyone?
