What Money Can’t Buy

If what you are about to read sounds familiar, it is. I ran this same article at this time last year. About 18 months ago I was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer. I don’t know how much time God intends for me to remain on this earth but I do know everything in this article is much more important than today. Thank you for allowing me to repeat myself.

As the holiday season approaches, it’s time to step back from our daily life and reflect on the truly important things. The economy, the stock market, our careers, our possessions are only for this life here on earth. Now is the time to reflect on what we are doing to prepare for our eternal life. What are we going to do in the coming year to prepare for our eternal life?

During the twenty years I worked on the Options Exchange, I slowly built a list of important things to remember. This list consisted of statements from others much smarter than I. I always carried this list in my briefcase. I updated it and read it often. I hope it helps you, the reader as much as it has helped me over the years to focus on what is truly important.

  • Buy whatever kids are selling in their front yards.
  • Smile a lot; it costs nothing and is beyond price.
  • Become someone’s hero.
  • Marry only for love.
  • Count your blessings.
  • Cherish your children for what they are, not what you would like them to be.
  • Give people the benefit of the doubt.
  • Watch for big problems; they disguise big opportunities.
  • Take a kid to the zoo.
  • Don’t miss the magic.
  • Don’t use time or words carelessly; they can never be retrieved.
  • Don’t be afraid to say I’m sorry.
  • Never underestimate the power of a kind word.
  • Laugh a lot, say “Please” a lot. Say “Thank you” a lot.
  • Be silly.
  • Sing with children.
  • Listen to children.
  • Take the scenic route.
  • Every day look for some small way to improve someone’s life.
  • Be there when you are needed.
  • Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.
  • Don’t expect life to be free.
  • Lie on your back and look at the stars.
  • Be modest, a lot was accomplished before you were born.
  • Take good care of those you love.
  • Watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” every Christmas.
  • Keep your promises.
  • Don’t major in minor things.
  • Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know.
  • Be romantic.
  • Be kinder than necessary.
  • Play with children.
  • Smell the roses.

Over the years I have spoken at a number of colleges. At the end of my speech I would remind them that they had spent four years or more at college to learn how to earn a living in the area they were interested in. They were ready to begin their real life. I would then ask each student to spend one day at an old folk’s home to learn what’s important at the end of life. I would tell them that none of the residences would talk about their careers or their successes. They would talk about their faith, their family and their friends.

Faith, family and friends, that’s what is important in life. At this Holy time of year, spend your time on your faith, with your family and your friends.

Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas, and a Most Joyous New Year!
