Gold's Election ReboundAdam Hamilton Gold screamed higher after US midterm elections, seemingly fueled by the blue tsunami. That more than reversed a serious breakdown plunge just several trading days earlier, apparently driven by broad risk-off selling. The common denominator behind this violent whipsawing is hyper-leveraged gold-futures trading. That not only explains gold's wild ride in recent months, but has likely formed a sturdy floor underlying gold. Democrats' sweeping victory this week was a forceful repudiation of Trump's foolish war with Iran and resulting higher prices. Democrats turned deep-red states blue, gaining at least 7 seats in the Senate and 41 in the House winning commanding majorities in both! But their 54 and 253 seats at this writing remain far under the 67 and 290 required to override presidential vetoes, guaranteeing gridlock for two years. That blue tsunami shouldn't have greatly surprised traders, as prediction markets and to a lesser extent polling had been predicting a decisive Democrat win for months. And presidents' parties tend to lose big in midterms, which suffer lower voter turnouts. In all previous midterms since World War II, on average presidents' parties lost 4 seats in the Senate and 26 in the House. So Tuesday's results aligned with precedent. The new Congress defined by these elections won't even be sworn in until early January, and Trump can veto everything Democrats pass. So why did gold rocket up a blistering 3.6% Wednesday alone on these election results? Maybe because Democrats controlling Congress will make it harder for Trump to keep waging war on Iran, reversing gold's vexing backward war trade that has plagued this metal much of this year. The premise behind that is simple but flawed. War escalations slow energy flows out of the Persian Gulf, driving crude-oil and oil-products prices higher globally. That threatens higher general inflation in the US, boosting Fed-rate-hike odds. The US dollar rallies on prospects for higher yields, igniting sizable gold-futures selling by speculators. Yet in past decades, geopolitical tensions and crises fueled big gold buying. The benchmark US Dollar Index did weaken a bit Wednesday, but merely shed a modest 0.3%. That's way too little to explain gold's massive 3.6% surge. Something more is at play here, almost certainly hyper-leveraged gold-futures trading. Each gold-futures contract controls 100 troy ounces of gold worth $406,490 at Wednesday's close. Yet current cash-in-account margin requirements are only $20,180 per contract. That means these speculators can run extreme leverage up to 20.1x, which is actually on the low side of their usual 20x-to-25x range! At 20x, a mere 5% gold move against specs' bets will wipe out 100% of their capital risked. Thus they can't afford to be wrong for long and must maintain ultra-short-term trading time horizons, days or weeks at most. That leverage gives specs a proportional outsized impact on gold prices. Gold didn't rip higher on those election results because the coming shift in political power will affect it much. That frenzied buying erupted because of speculators' lopsided gold-futures positioning leading into that day, which had to be normalized sooner or later with big mean-reversion buying. The election results were the catalyst, but one was inevitably imminent anyway. Spec gold futures had hit a major floor. This chart superimposes gold over speculators' collective gold-futures positioning, which is reported weekly in the famous Commitments of Traders reports. CoTs are current to Tuesday closes, but don't get published until late on subsequent Friday afternoons. So specs' total long contracts rendered in green and their shorts in red run to Tuesday October 27th, one week before election day. They portended a gold rebound.
That last-reported CoT week at this writing proved pretty remarkable. During it gold suffered a major technical breakdown, plummeting 2.7% on Thursday the 22nd. That decisively shattered gold's lower support at $4,100 for a low-consolidation trading range that had held solid for 18 consecutive trading days! That was backward-war-trade driven, with selling apparently ignited by an overnight New York Times article. It said US and Israeli militaries were preparing for a major joint attack on Iran after midterm elections. It would be the third major wave of US airstrikes on Iran, and the first Israeli ones since mid-March. Given how viscerally the hardline Shia Muslims ruling Iran hate the Jews, that would certainly be a huge escalation. The Israelis rejoining Trump's war could stir up Iranian proxies in the region intensifying combat. Specs dumped gold futures on that, their extreme leverage driving cascading selling. In that CoT week they sold a large 16.2k long contracts while also adding a small 3.8k short ones. That combined for big gold-equivalent selling of 62.1 metric tons, the most specs had done in any CoT week since way back in early February! That forced gold's troubling low-consolidation support breakdown really ramping bearishness. That selling left total spec longs at just 272.3k contracts, the lowest they had been since early August. As is evident in this chart, spec gold-futures longs greatly outnumber their shorts making longs proportionally more important for driving gold price action. Over the past 52 CoT weeks, spec longs exceeded their shorts by an average of 5.0x! So what these hyper-leveraged traders are doing in longs can dominate gold. I wrote about these super-low spec longs in our weekly subscription newsletter published Tuesday afternoon well before any election results. It argued "...the more contracts these traders sell the less they have left to sell. That also leaves more capital firepower to aggressively buy back in fueling a sharp gold rally. ...follow-on gold-futures selling should be tightly limited since specs are already essentially sold out." To better understand what spec long positioning implies, it is useful to consider it in the context of recent trading ranges. The most-logical one today is gold's late monster record bull, which skyrocketed 196.4% higher over 27.8 months into late January 2026 without a single 10%+ correction! During that spec gold-futures longs ran between 252.9k to 441.0k contracts, establishing a probability-defining trading range.
For years its support has acted like a major floor for gold, as mostly-spent spec long selling rebounds in strong mean-reversion buying. Indeed over the subsequent three CoT weeks after that early-August low, these hyper-leveraged traders added an enormous 30.4k, 6.3k, and 23.6k longs! That catapulted gold a massive 14.4% higher in those same three weeks! That and follow-on buying made for a huge August. One week before Election Day, spec longs were just 0.3% above early August's rally-igniting lows again just 10% up into their trading range during gold's last bull! So gold was due for another big-and-fast rally regardless of election results. Such low spec longs made what happened during the latest-but-not-yet-reported CoT week ending this Tuesday a real anomaly. On Friday the 30th, gold suffered another big breakdown. That day gold plummeted a brutal 3.6% to $3,880, shattering mid-July's $3,973 low that marked the end of gold's serious 26.3% selloff in its post-monster-record-bull reckoning! The apparent driver was risk-off selling as Alphabet then Intel stocks crashed after disappointing Q3 results, sucking in everything. Fully 2/3rds of gold's drop happened in two hours surrounding the US open as Intel cratered a catastrophic 28.6%! Such a gold breakdown was supremely improbable given those low spec gold-futures longs heading into it, but nothing is impossible in markets. Instead of normal bell-curve distributions, daily price action has fat tails with outsized up and down days more likely. While gold's second major breakdown in as many weeks was certainly painful psychologically, it left gold extremely oversold which was very bullish for it. Last Friday gold closed at just 86.3% of its baseline 200-day moving average, the most oversold it had been on that basis since mid-August 2013. Just three trading days before midterm-election results came in, gold hit a wild 13.2-year extreme in oversoldness! And while we won't know until the latest CoT data well after this essay is published, odds are specs dumped even more longs or piled into shorts to drive that. So heading into Election Day, gold was extremely oversold with speculators' gold-futures longs extremely low. Both all but guaranteed a big-and-fast rebound rally driven by massive mean-reversion buying was imminent. The only real question was what the triggering catalyst would be and when it would emerge. Those election results were as good of catalyst as any, even if they didn't have much apparent gold implications. Specs' collective gold-futures trading fully explained gold's 17.4% surge from mid-July to late August, as those traders added 60.2k long contracts while covering 4.6k shorts. That's the equivalent of 201.5t of gold buying in less than six weeks, massive! From there gold subsequently plunged into an outsized autumn pullback, fueled by a mini-mania in Fed-rate-hike expectations and the resulting surging US dollar. And spec gold-futures selling also fully explains gold's 16.8% correction into late October. During that span, specs dumped 59.5k longs while adding 4.4k shorts. That adds up to 198.9t of gold-equivalent selling, erasing nearly all of the preceding rally's buying! And I suspect this is understated, since that latest-reported CoT a week before Election Day was before gold's second massive breakdown day last Friday. And gold didn't recover much between Friday's miserable $3,880 close and this Tuesday's $3,924 before voting results started coming in. So total spec longs were probably considerably lower than that 272.3k a week earlier, and thus even less than 10% up into their preceding gold bull's trading range! That would have been deep into gold-futures-floor territory, greatly increasing odds for an imminent big-and-fast bounce. Had Republicans defied the tough polling and somehow won big, gold likely would've surged too. Maybe even more, since that would've lit a fire under stock markets fueling massive risk-on buying that would've spilled into gold. Super-low spec longs leading into voting left gold wound like a coiled spring, ready to explode higher on some catalyst. If it wasn't the midterm elections, it soon would've been something else. Once gold rebounds off its likely gold-futures floor, those rallies tend to quickly grow large as specs flood back into futures to chase gold's upside momentum which amplifies it. Again after early August's similar low-spec-longs levels, gold soared 14.4% in just three weeks on huge spec long buying! As of the data cutoff for this essay at Wednesday's close, gold had merely rallied 3.6% albeit all compressed into one day. Democrats' blue-tsunami victory does have big implications for stock markets. Plenty of them ran on anti-AI-datacenter sentiment, and will likely try to regulate datacenter construction. That could prove a big problem for these AI-bubble stock markets levitating on the epic datacenter-buildout capital spending. But for gold, who wields power in Washington doesn't seem to matter much. Both political parties are profligates. Just like Democrats, Republicans have been operating with huge fiscal deficits running up the terrifying US national debt. The current Republican Congress with Trump is running $2.0t annual deficits which have blasted the national debt to an eye-popping $40.6t! That's one reason Republicans lost big, they are still spending like drunken sailors despite campaigning over two years earlier partially on reducing spending. Both parties are going to continue radically overspending until bond markets force their hands. Gold is a major beneficiary of the resulting perpetual inflation and ever-higher prices, which boosts gold investment demand. That profligate spending also weakens the US dollar, driving the gold price which is really the dollar-gold exchange rate higher. Democrats and Republicans are all spendthrifts once they win power! With spec gold-futures longs near or even under recent years' floor, gold was due to blast higher soon no matter how voting played out. Blue or red doesn't matter for gold with both parties running the US fiscal ship horrendously. With gold's technicals so battered by those two recent breakdowns forcing gold into deep secular oversoldness extremes, and spec longs super-low, these elections sure didn't look risky for gold. So we've been taking advantage of gold's recent correction, aggressively adding newsletter trades in fundamentally-superior smaller mid-tier and junior gold miners. Many of these were reloading trades stopped out by that gold selloff, realizing plenty of solid gains from gold's preceding August surge. The gold stocks are due to explode back higher with gold's rebound rally on big mean-reversion gold-futures buying. The bottom line is gold was pounded to its futures floor just ahead of midterm elections. Gold suffered two major technical breakdowns in two weeks, driven by big speculator gold-futures dumping. That left total spec longs near the bottom of recent years' trading range, all but guaranteeing imminent big mean-reversion buying igniting then snowballing on some catalyst. Midterm election results were as good as any. Democrats' blue-tsunami victory shouldn't have greatly surprised traders, since prediction markets and plenty of polling had predicted that. The Democrats won't regain power for a couple months yet, and Trump's veto will keep them in check. So these midterm elections didn't have significant fundamental implications for gold. It simply rebounded off its futures floor, and such futures-fueled rallies tend to grow large. ### Nov 11, 2026 Thoughts, comments, or flames? Fire away at zelotes@zealllc.com.
