The
Gulf of Mexico
A Crisis that Must Be Resolved
The Earth Organization
Oct 25, 2010
The Earth Organization is an independent,
environmental non-profit organization that works to protect and
enhance the planet's water resources, and plant and animal life.
We do this in interactive and supportive relationships with business
and industry, governments and the cultures and societies in which
we work.
THIS IS NOT AN ASPHALT HIGHWAY
This is a solid layer of dead fish and
crustaceans floating on top of Gulf of Mexico waters just South
of New Orleans on September 17th, 2010 which was the second one
in less than a week.

THE PROBLEM:
The impression purveyed in the media
currently is that the damage in the Gulf was less than feared
and that natural micro organisms are swiftly cleaning up the
oil spill. This is false and misleading. The dispersant kills
the natural micro organisms. The reality of just how toxic the
Gulf waters are now is well demonstrated in the pictures above.
Although the Louisiana Gulf waters are no stranger to fish kills,
the oxygen depletion created by the massive amount of oil, combined
with the highly toxic dispersant, has created a situation that
is far worse than the quality of water prior to the blowout.
The media has moved on. Yet, the on-going
disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is of vast proportion. The oil
is not gone. The majority of it is sitting at the bottom of the
ocean or dangerously spread throughout the water and is killing
off countless numbers of marine life and wildlife. There are
unprecedented numbers of people going into hospitals or medical
clinics around the Gulf with severe health issues related directly
to the extraordinarily toxic combination of oil and chemical
dispersant. They come in contact with it through the water, eating
seafood, or breathing the air which has evaporated off the Gulf
waters. There are many reports of farmer's crops being destroyed
by the oil and dispersant in the air. Gulf fish is added to the
feed of livestock, and it has been scientifically proven that
the toxins move up the food chain to humans. The testing for
seafood safety is woefully inadequate because, per the EPA and
the FDA, they have only been testing for oil, not the far more
toxic chemicals in the dispersant. This is of great concern to
the Gulf seafood and restaurant industry, as well as a large
number of scientists.
KEY INFORMATION:
The
Earth Organization is an independent, international non-profit
dedicated to researching environmental and conservation issues
and introducing effective, long-term solutions. We are pro business,
pro flourishing economy, pro jobs and industry, and work with
these entities to help bring workable solutions that enhance
their growth while supporting a healthy environment for all life.
Our current focus is the restoration of the long term health
of the Gulf of Mexico. The end result of our efforts will be
a reinvigorated economy where the fishing industries, tourism
industries, oil industries, and all other aspects of the Gulf's
way of life that depend on clean water can responsibly flourish.
We are accomplishing this by supporting proven technologies that
will heal the Gulf, and by removing the barriers to their implementation.
You Need to Know
"Dispersed oil" does not
mean that the oil is gone. It means "mixed in."
Add a pint of motor oil to a bathtub of water. Mix in a highly
caustic and poisonous chemical that causes the oil to break up
into fine particles so that it is less visible in the water.
Most people would have the good sense not to bathe in it or drink
it.
Per scientific studies:
- Corexit (the dispersant being used),
combined with oil, is 10 times as toxic as oil alone. In studies,
50% of the test fish died within 96 hours when in contact with
2 parts Corexit to 1 million parts water.
- Per the manufacturer's official safety
data sheets, results from direct contact with Corexit causes:
- permanent skin damage and scarring;
- permanent lung and eye damage;
- red blood cells to break down causing
internal hemorrhaging.
A few examples of ways you and your loved
ones could unwittingly consume oil and dispersant:
- by living close to the Gulf waters,
you are breathing it.
- by eating fish or crustaceans from the
Gulf you are likely to be ingesting it;
- If you take Omega oil supplements you
could ingest it if the fish are harvested from the Gulf;
- If you eat beef, pork or poultry, Gulf
fish is fed to livestock and it accumulates as it moves
up the food chain.
- If you eat vegetables or fruit from
any of the Gulf states, you could be ingesting it.
- Your pets could be eating it
in their food.
In correspondence received by the Gulf
Coast Barefoot Doctors on September 17th, it was stated:
"My brother's recent hospice
told me about patients dying of internal bleeding and pneumonia
after getting rashes and respiratory illness. And also getting
sick and bleeding internally after eating Gulf seafood."
These are symptoms of exposure
to Corexit.
Our purpose is not to be alarmist. We
have no interest whatsoever in creating concern, where concern
is not due. But this is a situation that is of great concern,
and one which must be addressed and resolved. Fortunately, there
is a down-to-earth, effective, and reasonable answer.
THE SOLUTION:
There is exceptionally good news but
the general public is not aware of it: there is a solution. The
Earth Organization has researched extensively, locating cutting-edge
methods of "bio-remediation" [Bio-remediation is defined as the
harnessing of natural, beneficial micro organisms to clean up
toxic conditions. Bio = life. Remediation = remedy,
ie. to use life to remedy. Micro organisms digest and convert
toxins into non-toxic components.]
which would bring the Gulf waters back to their pre-spill condition.
Through scientifically proven steps, it first reduces the toxicity
of the oil and dispersant, and then harnesses the power of naturally-occurring
microbes, helping Mother Nature greatly speed up the process
of cleaning up a toxic situation. What normally would take decades
or centuries for her to clean up, takes a few weeks with this
process, once it is applied.
We have identified bio-remediation companies
which have the production capabilities to handle an oil spill
of the size and toxicity level of this one. One of these companies,
for example, has effectively cleaned up more than 14,000 oil
spills in the past 20 years with the US military as their biggest
client. The Earth Organization has no financial connections to
any bio-remediation companies. We receive no funding or monetary
exchange for educating the public about this technology. We strongly
advocate the technology because we have seen the results and
know, with certainty, that this is the most viable, effective,
thorough and swift solution available to returning the Gulf to
its pre-spill condition. There are absolutely no bad side effects
resulting from its implementation and, surprisingly, it is a
fraction of the cost of all other approaches.
The Gulf, which has provided 30% of the
seafood to the rest of the world, and which has been a
tremendous resource to the economy through tourism and oil drilling,
can be returned to its pre-spill condition, if not better, and
begin to build back the bounty of marine life that it once held.
The waters of the Gulf could be safe once again.
Our Campaign
There are specific steps we are taking
to educate the government, the public, and BP:
1) We have produced a half-hour TV news
program that educates the public that there is a solution,
and gives them a rudimentary understanding of what bio-remediation
is and how it works. It calls on the public to demand that it
be implemented.
We have the TV program already set to air over 100 times throughout
35 cable channels in Louisiana and are setting up other outlets,
as well. We need to finish the post production process and then
make 5 thousand copies to get it out to government and civic
leaders and the media. This is a critical step on our campaign
strategy.
2) Concurrent with the airing of the
TV program, we will release a powerfully written study co-authored
by several highly regarded scientists. The report will lay out
in one, easy-to-understand document current facts from independent
scientific testing of the air, water and seafood safety in the
Gulf for the public's health.
3) Simultaneous with the above, our staff
will hold Town Hall meetings, as well as meet with government
and civic leaders and media to educate them on bio-remediation
and to elicit their help on getting bio-remediation implemented.
Budget
The budget for this Campaign is $120,000. These funds will
cover;
1) completion of the TV program;
2) a dedicated team of 5 people, full time for 3 months;
3) travel and town hall meeting costs;
4) educational materials;
5) a large media event;
6) coordination of a volunteer task force, and;
7) administrative supplies.
CONCLUSION
There is a clear and compelling need
to remedy this disaster for the people, marine life, wildlife,
water, and vegetation in the Gulf. But as noted above, the effects
of this toxic holocaust will wind its way into the food chain
and the lives of every American citizen and beyond. The negative
consequences of this, if left unhandled, will be staggering for
many years to come.
We have no choice but to take full responsibility
for ensuring that the Gulf is cleaned up. And, with bio-remediation,
it can be done rapidly. Every day that goes by, more children
are getting sick, more wildlife is dying, more people are out
of work from the increasingly distressed economy caused by the
spill, more businesses are closing. But restoring the Gulf waters
to their pre-spill condition puts the foundation in place to
turn the entire situation around, put people back to work, allow
the wildlife and marine life to recover, and shield the public's
health from further toxic danger.
We need your help to get it done. If
you feel, as we do, that the above situation must be handled,
and rapidly, please support our efforts through a generous, tax-deductible
donation to our campaign.
